What might have seemed like the end of her sports career was just the start for Sophia Latif Estafan (‘26).
“In 7th grade, Sophia was going through some medical issues and it is something she is still managing to this day,” said Coach Zachary Kumor, head varsity coach. “With that happening at such a young age, it was an option for her to put sports aside, especially a new sport like basketball.” Kumor continues and says her determination to keep playing basketball resembles her effort on the court.
Estafan is a four year varsity player and current captain of South girls basketball team. She started playing basketball after her mom pushed her to join a recreation league in third grade. This season, she has achieved a career high of 23 points to lead South over J.P. Stevens with a 58-36 win.
Taking up this challenge, in her nine years of hard work, she has formed a strong bond with basketball, receiving multiple accolades.
“Last year, I was the first girl to receive the Pirates award, an award that reflected all my stats and everything that I contributed to the team,” Estafan reflected.
She has also received Player of the Week from NJ.com, along with articles being published about her on the Trentonian. Last year, she was selected to be the front cover of the Westminster Newspaper for her standing in the sport.
Recording 20 rebounds against North last year, 17 against Hightstown, and averaging 11.2 rebounds per game, Estafan’s passion to reach new heights doesn’t stop here. “I want to be able to reach my own personal goal of 500 rebounds,” she said.
Estafan is also appreciated by her teammates as an inspiring leader.
Teammate Ridhi Paula (‘29) said, “Sophia creates a positive impact on the team by always encouraging her teammates, leading by example, and always keeping a positive attitude.”.
Teammate Anabella Ruiz (‘26) also appreciates the spirit Estafan brings to the team. “She is the reason our team continues to get better and we are all so thankful for the experience to play and be friends with her.”
Highlighting her team spirit, Coach Kumor said, “When she is out of the game, she truly is the loudest girl on the bench and if one of her teammates hits a three pointer, she is up out of her seat and celebrating. Even during JV games, as varsity is sitting and waiting, she is engaged in that game and encouraging her younger teammates.”
While many of her teammates are inspired by her, Estafan also has a group of people she looks up to: her family. “Having an older sibling who pushes me to play harder–that really inspires me to play hard every single time, whether it’s just a drill in practice or if I’m playing in an actual game. I also just shoot hoops in my driveway or play with my younger brother to help him. Just having a ball in my hand helps me stay ready for the winter season,” Estafan said.
Estafan is someone who hopes to support other young players. “I don’t want them to be scared because they’re a starter,” she shared. “I want to be able to help them.”
