At South, relationships between teachers and students are at the core of our district’s educational excellence. Science teacher Dr. Katherine Heavers and former social studies teacher Ms. Valerie Kearns, who taught at South for 12 years, explore this powerful relationship in their recent book “Transforming Teaching Through Relationship-Building and Self-Reflection: Finding Our Way In.”
Ms. Kearns, who is a lecturer and clinical supervisor at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education, said, “My students inspired my contributions to this book, in so many ways.”
Dr. Heavers said, “My original inspiration to write this book was to share my findings and theory I had first put out into the world in the form of my doctoral research.” Dr. Heavers holds a doctorate in social and philosophical foundations of education from Rutgers University.
Dr. Heavers said that the most effective teachers were those who “found ways to connect without being inappropriate or breaking any emotional boundary: they were masters at being authentic, honest role models of both intellectual prowess and powerful creativity.”
As Dr. Heavers explains in her book, when teachers engage in ongoing self reflection, they become role models for students, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.
This reflection helps build trust, creates a supportive environment, and empowers students. At its core, Dr. Heavers and Ms. Kearns’ book reminds us that meaningful education is built through human connections.
