South welcomes a familiar face as a new security aide: Ms. Cecilia Cartmill. Every morning, Ms. Cartmill stands at the back entrance, greeting students and staff as they arrive at school. Previously, she worked as a substitute proctor.
“I was on a permanent rotation here at High School South,” Ms. Cartmill explained. “So I was here four days a week: three days in room 100 doing supportive study hall and one-day doing sub study.”
During her time as a proctor, she got to know her students. “Out of the gate, when I had substudy she was so nice to me,” said Aidan Edwards (‘26).
Megan Espirit (‘25) said, “She already knew us off the bat before she went into security so if I need anything I am likely to go to her.”
Now in a different role at South, Ms. Cartmill is glad she is still involved with students. “It’s a change of pace,” she said. “I still see students on a day-to-day basis. I’m maybe even more involved than when I was in the supportive study hall.”
Ms. Cartmill’s new job requires her to keep watch of the school. “I walk around the school to make sure that kids are in the classroom learning, and if they’re walking around I have to make sure they have passes,” she said.
Most importantly, Ms. Cartmill loves connecting with people. Espirit said, “Whenever I’m walking with someone she doesn’t know she will make an effort to ask their name and what grade they’re in.”
If you are looking for someone to talk to, or someone to help you navigate school, Ms. Cartmill is a friendly face you can find in the commons or the hallways. She is a valuable member on South’s pirate ship.
