Italian-American heritage month

Manika Niwas

Celebrated since 1989, October celebrates the 26 million Italian-Americans living in the US and this month includes Columbus Day. Italian-Americans make up America’s fifth largest ethinic group. This heritage month began when a proclamation was made by Congress and President George H. W. Bush. Many events are held across the country to commemorate the achievements and successes of Italian-Americans. One of the biggest celebrations is a parade held in New York City on Columbus Day. Celebrations similar to this are held all over the country.
